A cabin at sea costs about what assisted living costs

Living on a ship sounds like a stunt until you put the monthly figure next to a care home. Then it turns into an arithmetic problem. The arithmetic does not favour the shore.

Villa Vie Residences runs a ship called the Odyssey as a full-time home. Rent by the month, or buy a cabin outright.

Month to month starts at $4,800 single. $6,000 for two. That covers meals, drinks, housekeeping, entertainment, internet and onboard medical.

What the shore options cost

A single cabin sits under median assisted living. It sits above independent living. It is about a CCRC monthly fee without the entrance fee. That entrance fee averages more than $480,000.

Buying instead of renting

Villa Vie sells terms too. Five years starts near $49,999. Lifetime ownership of an inside cabin starts around $129,999. A balcony stateroom runs to $329,000. An all-inclusive lifetime option is listed from $349,999.

Those are purchase prices. They are not the whole cost. Ask what the recurring fees are before comparing any of them against rent.

What the brochure will not weigh

• Care does not scale. Assisted living exists because people need help with daily tasks. A ship is not built for that, and needs change without warning.
• Company risk. You are buying decades of housing from a young operator in a thin market. A care home failing is bad. A ship company failing while you live on the ship is worse.
• Resale. Ask who buys a cabin from you at 82, and what it fetches.
• Distance. Family visits mean flights to a port. That cost lands on them, and it decides how often you see them.

Who this suits

The case is strongest for someone healthy and mobile, with no care needs on the horizon. Someone who would otherwise pay for independent living or a CCRC. Against that comparison the money works.

It weakens fast once help with daily living enters the picture. Price it as housing. That is what it is.
